Richard St Onge and I are finally reunited after all this time! We reminisce that it was 7 years ago when we shared a little basement suite with Chris O'Neill in Kitsilano, Vancouver.
I arrived in St John's Newfoundland 2 hours before Rich's cello recital. His Masters in Cello Performance. Wow. He killed it.
After 4 quick days in NFL (ha!) packing Rich's stuff up, we headed to Halifax. Who gave us a ride from the airport?? Fred Penner!! We're old friends!
Our Via Rail train left on the 17th. Rich and I were rewarded two First Class tickets for performing a set of music in each of the Cross Canada's entertainment cars each day (2 hours total music). And breathe in the diverse nature of Canada's tundra-strewn midland. It was beautiful. And the music was incredible. We haven't missed a beat in our time apart. Nailing each other's energy, vamping into nostalgic spontaneous vignettes of inspiration.
We reunited with Chris (O'Neill) in our 36 hour Toronto layover. Killed the house concert that night, the three of us. It was magNIFICENT. Chris remains the greatest white handrummer/percussionist in Canada. I dare ANYONE to challenge him to a duel.
We played an impromptu concert in the train station at the Forks, in Winnipeg. Killed it, again.
Let me remark briefly about performing on a stompbox during train travel: it's retardedly difficult. My massage therapist spent about a collective 2 hours on my calves alone when I finally got home, from the strain of keeping my balance during onboard performances. Needless to say, though, between the cello, my awkward dancing balancing act and the fun we exuded, people onboard were highly entertained!
The energy brought everything we could dream of, right to our door. Favor, food, fun and lots of really good music. This is one of the coolest tours I've ever engaged!
Please don't ask me for any information regarding ViaRail's Entertainment agreement with Canadian artists. I've had a deluge of eager and interested artists that would love to travel across Canada the way we did. Remember: send that energy out (but not to me!!) and it will come to you!
Polaroid objects from the journey: Jameson Whisky, Jersey Milk Chocolate, Alexander Keiths at the Red Stag Brewery Pub, Stan Rogers at the Lower Deck, Ed Williams in Quidi Vidi, snow all over St Johns, performing "Now" for a couple at the station in Toronto, shooting stars outside of Jasper, sleeping outside in Toronto, the cherry blossom festival, top notch graffiti in Montreal, practicing in our sleeping birth, onboard showering.
